This is part of the beauty of denim!īir denim stilinin mavi renkte olduğunu gördüğünüzde indigo ile boyandığını anlarsınız. But in any cases, dyeing will be magical as it will always slowly turns bluer when coming out of the vat. And, sometimes they add black or blue sulfur on the threads first before dyeing so they will get faster a dark blue color. Sometimes they double the concentration of indigo in these vats so they need to be dyed less to achieve the result. Normally, this process repeats with 4 to 12 indigo dyes. Each time when a thread is coming out of a vat, it will be up in oxygen for around 1 to 3 minutes before it goes into the next vat. In production in a factory, the yarns are going into several indigo vats (also called indigo boxes) to achieve the right blue indigo color. To achieve the desired blue-indigo color, you need to dye the threads more than once. Therefore it is also called a magical process. But then the magic appears, and when the dyed threads are coming in contact with oxygen, slowly the blue colors pops-up! To experience this process is something really special. You dye the threads into an indigo vat, which has a greenish look, and when it comes out the threads also look greenish. This means that the yarns are first dyed in an indigo vat before they’re woven into a piece of denim fabric.ĭyeing with indigo is something magical. ![]() Next to these two, there’s the most common dyeing technique called yarn dyeing. ![]() It is not often used as the result is uneven and therefore not suitable for the denim industry. This is used when a fabric is already woven, so it is also known as fabric dyeing. There’s also the piece dyeing technique, better known as fabric dyeing. This is used to achieve different patterns, lines, colors, and so on the item. You can garment dye, with this technique you dye finished or semi-finished garments into indigo. There are three main methods of how to dye. And to top it off, it was also way easier to use in production as natural indigo is inconsistent in color too. Synthetic indigo was the perfect solution. So, especially when the demand for denim and jeans rised in the market, they need a faster and cheaper alternative. Next to that, using synthetic indigo is way cheaper to use in production. They say that around 1914, more or less than 95% of all natural indigo production disappeared into synthetic indigo dyeing. The synthetic indigo makes it easier to color threads blue as you don’t need the Indigofera Tinctoria plant anymore. He described his first synthesis of indigo in 1878 (from isatin) and the second synthesis in 1880. In 1865 the German chemist Adolf von Baeyer began working on the synthesis of indigo. Nowadays, most pairs of blue jeans and jackets are colored with synthetic indigo. Indigo was also cultivated in India, which was also the earliest major center for its production and processing. The dye was also known to ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Britain, Mesoamerica, Peru, Iran, and West Africa. The word indigo comes from the Latin word indicum, meaning Indian, as the dye was originally exported to Europe from India. Many Asian countries, such as India, China, Japan, and Southeast Asian nations have used indigo as a dye (particularly for silk) for centuries. The oldest known fabric dyed with indigo, dated 6,000 years ago, was discovered in Huaca Prieta, Peru. The most popular plant to dye with is the Indigofera Tinctoria which is usually cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. Natural indigo comes from plants, so using this means that there are no chemicals used in the process. Indigo is one of the first pigments used in the textile industry. When the indigo is washed off or chips off with wear, the core will be more and more exposed, so it will be more and more white.īut, before we go more into detail, let’s go back first to a brief history of indigo. This means that denim styles will age over time as the indigo doesn’t penetrate to the core of the yarns, this will stay white. It can be synthetic or natural indigo, but it is colored with the desired blue pigment. When a denim style is colored blue, you know that it's dyed with indigo.
